Paula Badosa ‘s campaign without a trophy this season continued when she lost to World No.3 Coco Gauff in the fourth round of the Italian Open with a scoreline of 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. After that defeat, she took to X to reply to a tweet about World No.1 Iga Swiatek ‘s remarks about tennis balls.

A user wrote what Swiatek talked about how tennis balls were listening to her for the first time, and that she played the way she wanted to. Badosa joked that she wished the ball to listen to her as well.

I wish they would listen to me as they listen to her.  Paula Badosa wrote on X

Here’s her post:

Swiatek, who may become the second player after Serena Williams to win both titles in Spain and Italy, has advanced to the semifinals after knocking out 18th seed Madison Keys 6-1, 6-3, and will face America’s Coco Gauff on May 17th. Before the Italian Open, she battled against Aryna Sabalenka in the Madrid Open final, which she ended up winning to lift her maiden Madrid Open title.

Coco Gauff’s coach Brad Gilbert criticizes Paula Badosa for her tactics

After Coco Gauff’s win over Paula Badosa, the former’s coach Brad Gilbert blamed the Spaniard for her behavior when she was serving. Gilbert accused Badosa of catching her ball tosses multiple times. He also asked the authorities to take action by giving players like her a time violation warning.

You have heard me say this so many times, catching your on ball toss on serv is should not be allowed, how can u catch 3 tosses in arow and not at least get time violation is beyond ridiculous, also allowing 45 catches in a match and nothing in rules is mind boggling and such disadvantage to returner  Brad Gilbert wrote on X

This comment from Gauff’s coach sparked different reactions from fans. While Gauff’s supporters agreed with his views, many called him unprofessional for such comments against the opponent.

The 2023 US Open champion hired Gilbert last year after parting ways with Père Riba. Gilbert has worked with Andy Murray, Andre Agassi, and Andy Roddick

As mentioned before, Gauff will next face Iga Swiatek in the semifinals and will aim to defeat the Pole for the second time. They have met 10 times, with Swiatek winning nine of the matches, while Gauff registered her first victory in last year’s Cincinnati Open.
